Hydrogen potential in a region of significant demand
Project Spinifex
15,000km2 (~4M acres)
3 permits
Permits
Located in the North-Eastern corner of South Africa in the Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and North-West provinces, and spanning a total of 15,000km2 (~4M acres) across three permits (249, 250 & 251).
The permits allow H2Au 100% exclusive rights to carry out hydrogen exploration studies and were granted by the Minister for mineral resources and energy in 2024.
The Market
In 2023 over 80% of South Africa’s energy came from unreliable, carbon intensive coal fired power stations. Project Spinifex lies within an area responsible for over 50% of South Africa’s energy consumption key industries such as mining, cement and steel are often unable to develop due to a lack of power.
In 2021 the department of Science and Innovation S.A proposed a hydrogen valley centred around Mogalakwena, Johannesburg and Durban hubs. These three hubs are forecast to have between 90-180Kt H2 demand every year. Project spinifex lies between two of these hubs and could readily supply domestic hydrogen and power to the industries needing to decarbonise.
The Play
Over 5km of Transvaal meta-sediments overlying granite-greenstone terrains and intruded by the worldslargest ultramafic igneous intrusion (65,000km2).
Active tectonic fault systems (TML, Steelport, Wonderkop) provide deep migration pathways and trapping opportunities.
Incidences of up to 80% hydrogen in mine gas reports.
